1934 LA REATA
Volume XXVI
Circus Edition
Sidney Kirkpatrick, Editor-in-Chief
James Leese, Circulation Manager
Florence Olson, Advisor and Business Manager
Published by the Pupils of Albuquerque High School,
Albuquerque, New Mexico
FOREWORD
The circus combines work with play for profit; the school combines work, work, and more work with some play for present and future profit; therefore, the staff of the La Reata feels that the use of the circus as a theme is not inappropriate.
DEDICATION
This year the staff of the La Reata felt that the teachers deserved praise not only as individuals, but as a group. Untiring efforts in behalf of the students, sympathy and encouragement are never lacking from this faculty of ours. La Reata takes this way to say "Thank you!"

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
The closing days of our high school life are drawing near. Having prepared ourselves well, we are facing the future with confidence and with eagerness to see what it has in store for us. A retrospect of the happy days of our school life leads us to believe that we have conducted ourselves in such a way as to deserve the honors which we shall soon receive at Commencement. The class of '34 bids those of you who remain a sincere farewell.
MARVIN LUCAS, President of Class of '34.
SENIOR CLASS SONG
(Sung to the tune of Anchors Away)
Hark, while the Bulldog's bark
Bids us adieu,
Farewell to A.H.S.
To teachers, classmates, true, true, true, true,
East, west, or north or south
Asea or ashore,
Keep burning in your heart
The fires of the class of 'Thirty-four!
Cast a last look, seniors,
At your alma mater while you may,
Many well-loved faces
Will be but a mem'ry from today,
Dear old halls,
Friendly walls;
We will miss them when away-Oh!
Out on the field of life
Where fate keeps score,
Recall the Bulldog spirit,
Hit the line once more, more, more, more!
Fight, classmates! Carry on!
Fourth downs ignore!
Keep flying o'er your heart
The colors of the class of Thirty-four!
-Harvena Richter, '34.

ORATORICAL CONTEST
MISS LYDIA NORTON
Miss Lydia Norton took first place in the oratorical contest this year with a fine paper entitled "Child Labor". Wallace Mize won second prize with Clara May Matthew following him closely with third place. The other contestants were James Lynn Hill, Carolyn Miles and Jack Wakefield.
Each speaker had ten minutes to talk. The speeches were memorized. The six compositions were judged by Walter Rogers, Carey Holbrook and Dan Burroughs. Mr. G. S. Klock, Mr. Don L. Dickerson and Mr. Robert Botts judged the ability of the six contestants as orators.
The Oratorical contest was so well attended and like that Miss Wells and Miss Dixon are already advocating another contest for next year similar to this one.
